BUND urges less frequent lawn mowing to protect insects and boost garden biodiversity
The German environmental group Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) advises homeowners to mow their lawns as rarely as possible, waiting until the grass reaches about 20 cm before cutting. It recommends using the highest mower setting, leaving uncut strips or small flower islands, and removing clippings to avoid nutrient overload. These practices help wildflowers such as daisies and clover thrive, providing nectar and pollen for pollinators and shelter for small wildlife, while also reducing watering needs and supporting soil organisms.
Gardeners are also advised on managing aggressively spreading perennials. Experts suggest selecting plants with limited seed production, pruning seedlings early, using containers with drainage holes to control runner growth, and choosing seed‑less cultivars such as Calamintha nepeta “Triumphator”. By combining a balanced planting structure of grasses, foliage plants, and long‑lived perennials, gardeners can limit unwanted spread while preserving a diverse and resilient garden ecosystem.
