Bundang CHA Hospital develops AI model to predict liver cancer immunotherapy effectiveness
A research team from Bundang CHA Hospital, in collaboration with medical professionals from the University of Vienna, has developed ‘CAPTYN’, an artificial intelligence-based model designed to predict the effectiveness of immunotherapy for liver cancer patients. The model specifically targets the combination therapy of atezolizumab and bevacizumab, which is a primary systemic treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
CAPTYN utilizes machine learning to analyze six standard blood test indicators: C-reactive protein (CRP), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), platelet count, total bilirubin, lymphocyte count, and neutrophil count. These markers reflect inflammation, tumor status, liver function, and immune status.
The model's performance was validated using data from 737 patients, including participants from the global phase 3 ‘IMbrave150’ clinical trial and real-world patient data from Severance Hospital. In external validation, CAPTYN achieved an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.70 in the IMbrave150 trial, demonstrating superior predictive performance compared to existing models like CRAFITY and ALBI. The research, which highlights the potential for personalized treatment strategies in liver cancer, has been published in the journal Cancer Communications.
