Bundesbank reports rise in counterfeit Euro coins
The Bundesbank reported that counterfeit Euro coins increased by 8.6 percent in the first half of 2026, with nearly 64,900 fake coins identified, primarily two-euro pieces.
To combat counterfeiting, the European Central Bank is working on a new series of banknotes featuring a revised design, with a proposal expected by the end of 2026. Current security features for 100 and 200-euro notes include a satellite hologram and a composition of 90 percent cotton fibers to increase durability.
Under Section 147 of the German Criminal Code, the intentional circulation of counterfeit currency can result in up to five years of imprisonment or a fine. However, the Federal Criminal Police Office notes that individuals who use counterfeit money without realizing it lack the necessary intent to be held criminally liable.
