Bundesjugendspiele to Reintroduce Competitive Timed Events Amid Health Concerns

The Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK) decided that schools can again offer the Bundesjugendspiele in a competitive format with stopwatches, measuring tapes and tiered awards, alongside a more playful version. The move aims to boost physical activity among children, addressing a study that found only 10.8% of German girls and 20.9% of boys meet the WHO’s recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise. The German Sport Teachers’ Association (DSLV) warned that a performance‑driven approach could demotivate weaker students and highlighted systemic issues such as insufficient school facilities and a shortage of qualified sport teachers. The association called for reliable guidelines and flexible pedagogical options, including targeted training for differentiated assessment and inclusive competition formats.
