Bundesliga introduces new refereeing rules and expanded VAR powers

Ahead of the new Bundesliga season, teams have undergone rule training conducted by top referees. The updates focus on hydration protocols and expanded Video Assistant Referee (VAR) capabilities.

Unlike the mandatory three-minute hydration breaks seen during the World Cup, the Bundesliga and UEFA have stated that referees may decide on hydration breaks at their own discretion based on temperature. This follows criticism from fans and experts regarding the use of such breaks for advertising.

Furthermore, the role of the VAR is being expanded. The assistant is now permitted to intervene in cases of incorrect player identity during warnings or dismissals. The VAR is also authorized to step in if a player is sent off due to an clearly incorrect second yellow card. However, the intervention is limited to identity corrections and does not extend to reviewing the validity of the warning itself.
