Bundesliga match sees unusual delay after referee injury

During a Bundesliga match between Union Berlin and Schalke 04 on September 11, an unusual incident occurred when referee Timo Gerlach suffered a calf injury during the second half. After seeking medical attention, Gerlach was unable to continue, leading to the fourth official, Jarno Wienefeld, taking over the match.

The transition process took approximately nine minutes, during which players remained on the pitch. This delay, combined with standard stoppage time, resulted in an exceptional 12 minutes of added time in the second half.

In the match itself, Schalke 04 secured a 3-1 victory, marking their first win of the season in the Bundesliga. Japanese midfielder Satoshi Tanaka played the full match, starting in place of the suspended Ron Schallenberg. Local media praised Tanaka for his tactical discipline and defensive coverage, noting his contribution to the team's balanced midfield performance.
