Bundesnetzagentur eases rules for electric vehicles as power storage

The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) has revised its regulatory framework for integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into the power market as energy storage units. Following criticism from the automotive industry, the agency is introducing significant changes to its 'Market Integration of Storage and Charging Points' (MisPel) rules.

Key adjustments include allowing households without solar installations to use a single smart meter for bidirectional charging, rather than requiring a second meter. Additionally, the agency has reduced the security discount factor for the simplified 'lump-sum option' from 0.5 to 0.2, easing the burden of levies and grid fees.

Bundesnetzagentur head Klaus Müller stated that the agency aims to make electromobility integration into the electricity market as simple and fast as possible. The move is seen as a breakthrough for bidirectional charging, potentially opening new business models for manufacturers like Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, as well as energy providers.
