Bundeswehr faces personnel shortage for Lithuania brigade

The German Bundeswehr is facing a personnel shortage in its efforts to form Panzerbrigade 45 'Lithuania', a major military project intended for NATO's eastern flank. According to data from the German Ministry of Defence, the brigade is currently only 60 percent staffed.

While personnel levels for forces already deployed in Lithuania have reached 92 percent, the overall brigade remains incomplete because key units, including tank and mechanized infantry battalions, are still being organized in Germany. These units are scheduled to arrive in Lithuania in 2027. Currently, there is a 40 percent personnel deficit within the forces remaining in Germany.

The brigade is intended to be fully operational by the end of 2027, consisting of approximately 4,800 soldiers and 200 civilian employees. It represents the first large-scale formation that the Bundeswehr intends to station permanently abroad.
