Germany expands drone defense and addresses government flight inefficiencies

Germany is intensifying its response to drone-related security threats and addressing logistical inefficiencies in government travel. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced the expansion of a Federal Police drone defense unit, aiming to increase personnel from 70 to 300 by the end of the year. This move follows a serious incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport involving a drone equipped with explosives. To bolster long-term security, a new Technology Center for Drone Security has been launched in Cochstedt, linked to the German Aerospace Center (DLR), to research and test defensive technologies against hybrid threats.

Separately, the Bundeswehr's government flight service is facing criticism regarding operational costs. Data from the Ministry of Defense reveals that approximately half of all flights in the first half of the year were conducted without passengers. This high number of empty flights is largely attributed to the fact that aircraft are stationed in Cologne, while government officials frequently begin their business trips in Berlin. While the Ministry defends these flights as necessary for training and readiness, lawmakers have labeled the situation a ‘expensive nuisance’ due to the ongoing logistical mismatch.
