Bundeswehr investigates sexual misconduct and drug abuse allegations
The German military is investigating serious allegations of sexual misconduct, drug abuse, coercion, and threats within the Sanitätsregiment 1 in Weißenfels. Ten soldiers are accused of participating in a competition to seduce female colleagues, allegedly exploiting their ranks and hierarchy. Investigators are also looking into allegations of drug trafficking and the suppression of complaints. At least one victim is reported to have been a minor at the time of the incidents.
The German Ministry of Defense has initiated internal investigations and informed Parliament. Immediate disciplinary actions have been taken: nine soldiers are banned from the Saxony-Anhalt barracks, seven are prohibited from performing service or wearing uniforms, and eight are facing disciplinary proceedings. Five cases have already been handed over to the public prosecutor.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has promised a thorough investigation, stating that if the allegations are confirmed, they would be ‘revolting’. He emphasized a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy and pledged to ensure perpetrators are held accountable while improving protection for victims. The military is considering measures such as an intervention center staffed with trained psychologists to address sexual abuse.
