Bundeswehr IT failure disconnects tens of thousands of reservists
Tens of thousands of German Bundeswehr reservists have been disconnected from central IT systems for more than a week due to a major technical failure at the state-owned IT service provider, BWI.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense confirmed that disruptions to certain IT systems are known and are being addressed through official reporting channels. The ministry ruled out a cyberattack, stating there were no data leaks or unauthorized third-party access, attributing the issue to operational reasons.
BWI stated the disruption was caused by updates to processing systems, making certain datasets currently unavailable. Reports suggest that during a mass data import, records for non-active reservists may have been deleted. The Bundeswehr has approximately 60,000 inactive soldiers, many of whom have lost access to computers, emails, and the military messenger service. BWI expects to restore access shortly.
