Bundeswehr reaches 13-year high with 186,700 soldiers

The Bundeswehr has reached its highest troop strength in 13 years, with approximately 186,700 personnel reported as of July 31, 2026. This figure places the German military within its government-mandated target corridor of 186,000 to 190,000 soldiers for the year 2026.

Recruitment metrics show significant growth. Job applications increased by 26 percent year-over-year to approximately 47,300, while new hires rose by 12 percent compared to the previous year, totaling roughly 15,400. Additionally, about 12,100 individuals are currently serving as voluntary or short-term soldiers under the new service model.

This expansion is part of a broader strategic effort to bolster Germany's defense capabilities and meet NATO requirements. The German government aims to increase the active-duty force to between 255,000 and 270,000 soldiers by the mid-2030s, alongside a target of 200,000 reservists. To support this, a new military service law was implemented on January 1, which includes mandatory registration questionnaires for 18-year-old men; as of July 31, approximately 378,000 such questionnaires had been sent out.
