Bundeswehr youth officers increase security policy education in German schools
The German Ministry of Defense reports a significant increase in engagement by 'youth officers'—representatives of the Bundeswehr who provide education on security policy at schools and universities. Following a decline during the pandemic, interest has surged since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In the past year, youth officers conducted 5,517 events, reaching 170,222 participants, marking the highest engagement level since 2012.
This trend is driven in part by a generational shift among teachers, who show greater openness to security policy education. While these officers are strictly prohibited from recruiting, discussions in classrooms have increasingly focused on topics of personal relevance to students, such as the new compulsory military service.
German federal states are increasingly formalizing this cooperation. Berlin and Brandenburg have established legal frameworks for long-term collaboration, while Hessen plans to expand it and Bavaria has already codified the cooperation into law. In contrast, Baden-Württemberg leaves the decision to individual teachers.
