Bundgaard Syndrome diagnosed as Turkey's first case in Diyarbakır

A 41‑year‑old man from Mardin, identified only as Doğan, sought care at Diyarbakır Selahaddin Eyyubi State Hospital for persistent dizziness, visual blackouts and chest pain. Cardiologists led by Dr. Ferdi Ekinci performed investigations that revealed Bundgaard Syndrome, a hereditary cardiac rhythm disorder first described in Denmark in 2018. The condition is extremely rare, with only 67 cases reported worldwide before this one, making Doğan the 68th patient globally and the first documented case in Turkey.

Family screening showed the same disorder in Doğan’s four‑year‑old daughter and several other relatives, confirming its hereditary nature. The patient is receiving medication and regular monitoring; no serious arrhythmia has been observed so far, and high‑risk individuals may be offered pacemakers or implantable cardioverter‑defibrillators. The case was reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).
