Bungie denies Marathon and Destiny merger rumors

Bungie has denied internet rumors suggesting that its game franchises, Marathon and Destiny, will be merged into a single brand. Julia Nardin, the creative director for Marathon, addressed the leaks on social media, stating that while both games share similar DNA, they remain independent entities. The rumors, which originated from 4chan and spread via Reddit, claimed the studio intended to link the game worlds to prepare for future projects.

Separately, Bungie announced a shift in its content delivery strategy for Marathon, moving away from a fixed seasonal model to allow more time for development and testing. A major update, titled Symbiosis, has been rescheduled from September 22 to December 8. This update is expected to introduce a permanent PvE mode, a social space, and a new Runner shell.

Prior to the December release, a smaller update is scheduled for October 6 to reset the game's economy and progress, alongside the temporary return of the Vault Breaker PvE mode. These changes come as the studio seeks to improve player retention following recent layoffs and challenges with player engagement.
