Bungie unveils roadmap to transform Marathon beyond extraction shooter
Bungie has announced a comprehensive roadmap to transform its shooter, Marathon, from a niche extraction-focused title into a broader survival experience. Acknowledging that the game was “overly difficult” and failed to reach the intended audience, the studio plans to introduce multiple gameplay modes to accommodate different player styles.
The rollout consists of three major phases. In October 2026, the “Nightfall Refresh” will update progression and reward systems. In December, the “Symbiosis” update will introduce the game’s first permanent PvE mode, an experimental Team Deathmatch, and a new character called Bishop.
The most significant evolution is scheduled for March 2027, which will aim to interconnect PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences. This update will include a refactored progression system, new narrative elements, new enemies, and an entirely new zone. Additionally, Bungie confirmed it will bring previously removed content back to Destiny 2 to rebuild player trust.
