Bungie to restore Destiny 2 content and pivot Marathon development

Bungie has announced a major strategic shift to rebuild player trust following recent layoffs and community backlash. The studio confirmed it will reverse its controversial Content Vault policy for Destiny 2, planning to restore previously removed campaigns, destinations, and raids. Studio Head Poria Torkan and Marathon General Manager Josh Deane acknowledged that the decision to remove content had a lasting negative impact on player trust.

The restoration process will be gradual, as technical updates to lighting, combat systems, and underlying engines are required to make older content compatible with the current version of the game. While Bungie has not officially announced a Destiny 3, they emphasized that the franchise remains foundational to their future and that they intend to tell more stories within the universe.

Additionally, Bungie is pivoting the development of its upcoming title, Marathon. Moving away from a strict extraction shooter format, the studio aims to evolve the game into a deeper survival experience. This includes expanding gameplay options to include cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, and PvPvE modes to appeal to a broader player base.
