Bungoma County police investigate 36 pregnancies at Bakisa Senior School
Police in Bungoma County, Kenya, have launched an investigation after 36 girls at Bakisa Senior School in Webuye East were found to be pregnant. Principal Ruth Mulika reported that between January and September 2026, 13 students had already given birth, 13 were currently pregnant, and 10 had left the school.
Webuye East Assistant County Commissioner Emmanuel Kenga stated that security agencies are investigating the cases to identify those responsible, noting that adults are likely involved. The school is a day school, and the principal identified the daily commute as a factor that exposes students to predators, requesting funding for a dormitory to improve safety.
Authorities are also looking into potential links to the local circumcision season and the brewing of traditional liquor. While only one family has officially reported the matter to the police, gender and child protection officers are urging other parents to come forward without fear of legal repercussions.
