Bupa launches health series exploring the impact of sedentary lifestyles
Bupa has launched a new five-part global health video series titled ‘Health or Hype’ to help individuals distinguish scientific wellness from internet trends. Hosted by British fitness coach Joe Wicks MBE, the series examines five pillars of health: movement, nature, nutrition, sleep, and mental well-being.
In the premiere episode focused on movement, Wicks participated in a three-day ‘movement fast’ by limiting his daily activity to just 2,000 steps. Clinical metabolic breath testing (PNOE) conducted during the experiment revealed that sedentary behavior significantly impacts the body in a short timeframe. Within 72 hours, Wicks experienced a sharp drop in metabolic flexibility, meaning his body struggled to process fats efficiently, resulting in excess glucose in the bloodstream and decreased motivation.
The series suggests that instead of pursuing grueling workouts, individuals can benefit from ‘movement snacks’—small, joyful, and manageable bursts of activity to combat the effects of a desk-bound lifestyle.
