Burberry opens 170th‑anniversary trench coat exhibition at V&A, London
Burberry is marking its 170th anniversary with a free exhibition titled “The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon.” The display is housed in the Victoria & Albert Museum’s Prince Consort Gallery in South Kensington and runs from 21 September 2026 through 3 January 2027.
The exhibition is organised into three chronological sections – “Invention,” which looks at Thomas Burberry’s 1879 patent for breathable cotton gabardine; “Craft,” which details the coat’s construction such as the hand‑stitched collar, storm flap, detachable throat latch and house‑check lining; and “Creativity,” which showcases 19 runway reinterpretations from the past 25 years, including pieces by former chief creative officer Christopher Bailey and current chief creative officer Daniel Lee, as well as a historic trench worn by designer Hardy Amies.
The show coincides with Burberry’s catwalk presentation at London Fashion Week and underlines a multi‑year partnership between the fashion house and the V&A that will culminate in the opening of a dedicated Burberry Gallery at the museum in autumn 2028.
