Bureau of Land Management leases Colorado oil and gas parcels for $4.88 million

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has conducted a significant oil and gas lease sale in Colorado, generating approximately $4.88 million. The third-quarter auction resulted in the leasing of 14,212 acres across Arapahoe, Jackson, Moffat, Rio Blanco, Routt, and Weld counties, with 29 parcels leased to eight different entities.

This surge in leasing activity is part of a federal initiative to expand domestic energy development on public lands. The BLM has offered 403 parcels in Colorado this year, a notable increase compared to the 290 parcels leased over the previous seven years. These policy shifts include efforts to reduce red tape, lower royalty rates, and shorten public comment periods.

The increased development has sparked protests from environmental groups and local community advocates. Concerns center on the proximity of drilling sites to sensitive areas, such as the Aurora Reservoir, a major water source for the City of Aurora. Specifically, the auction of parcels near Lowry Ranch has drawn criticism regarding potential environmental damage and health risks to nearby residential areas.
