Burgas Court hears defense claims in fatal Sunny Beach ATV crash

During proceedings at the Burgas District Court regarding a fatal ATV accident in Sunny Beach on August 14, 2025, the defense argued that the vehicle shown in video footage of the crash differs from the actual ATV involved. Defense lawyers noted discrepancies in license plate numbers, claiming the video shows vehicle number 13 while the accident involved vehicle number 4.

The defense also suggested the crash, which killed a 35-year-old woman and injured three others, may have been caused by a technical brake failure. Evidence was presented regarding a similar incident in June 2023 involving the same machine where brake failure was cited.

A key witness, 19-year-old technician Emil Mitev, testified that although he was hired to maintain the ATVs, he lacked the necessary qualifications to inspect engines or braking systems, having only checked lights and audio systems. The legal proceedings were briefly interrupted due to a bomb threat at the courthouse. The next hearing is scheduled for November 3.
