Greek motorists cross borders for cheaper fuel in neighboring countries

Greek motorists are increasingly crossing borders into Bulgaria and North Macedonia to purchase fuel at significantly lower prices. In Greece, unleaded gasoline prices hover around 2.20 to 2.50 euros per liter, with taxes and duties accounting for approximately 56 percent of the final cost.

In contrast, drivers can find gasoline in North Macedonia for roughly 1.61 euros per liter and in Bulgaria for prices that offer savings of approximately 50 to 60 cents per liter. For a standard 50-liter tank, this can result in savings between 25 and 35 euros. This trend is particularly notable among residents of northern Greek regions such as Serres, Drama, and Kilkis, who utilize border crossings like Evzones and Promachonas to access cheaper supplies.

Economic analysts note that these high domestic fuel costs in Greece are contributing to inflation by increasing the expenses associated with the production and transport of goods. Meanwhile, political opposition in Greece has called for the suspension of fuel taxes to alleviate the burden on citizens.
