Burgas Water Utility Director and Officials Arrested in Corruption Probe

Bulgarian State General Investigations Directorate (GDBOP) carried out a raid on the headquarters of the water utility VIK‑Burgas, detaining the company's director and more than ten regional directors. The operation focused on a corruption investigation alleging fictitious repairs on the water network valued at roughly 1.5 million leva.

The probe follows a previous scandal in the nearby town of Nesebar, where the head of the local water subdivision, Svilen Stanchev, was arrested after police found an €8,000 bribe and €33,000 in cash linked to illegal inclusion of a private property into the water supply. Authorities seized documentation related to the Nesebar branch and are reviewing additional paperwork at the Burgas headquarters. The investigation remains under the supervision of the public prosecutor, with no further arrests announced at the time of reporting.
