Burgenland authorities seize 55 reptiles from printing company

Authorities in Burgenland, Austria, discovered 55 reptiles being kept in the back rooms of a printing company. The animals, which included snakes, chameleons, turtles, and agamas, were seized during a joint inspection by the district administrative authority and police.

Many of the animals were found in poor health, exhibiting signs of pneumonia likely caused by insufficient temperatures, bite wounds, skin changes, dehydration, and mite infestations. While animals kept at the 40-year-old owner's private residence appeared well-cared for, the conditions in the printing facility were described as alarming.

Due to suspicions that some species may be protected under the Washington Convention (CITES), customs investigators were called in to verify the legality of the animals. The seized reptiles have been transferred to the exotic animal shelter ‘Leo for Hope’ in Vienna for professional care. The owner faces potential fines and criminal charges.
