Burgenland authorities seize eleven horses and five sheep due to neglect
Authorities in Deutsch Kaltenbrunn, located in the Jennersdorf district of Burgenland, have seized eleven horses and five sheep following reports of severe animal neglect. The intervention occurred after a report raised concerns regarding unacceptable living conditions on the property of a retired animal keeper.
During an inspection on August 13, 2026, officials discovered that the area designated as pasture was cluttered with manure, firewood, and various debris. Water sources were found to be highly contaminated, with old bathtubs being used as makeshift troughs.
Investigators reported that several horses were extremely emaciated and exhausted. The five sheep were found in poor condition, exhibiting matted fur and wounded hooves that hindered their ability to stand or walk. While the owner claimed to provide regular care, authorities found the animals hidden in a small stable and shed behind the residence. Most of the horses lacked the required EU equine passports.
