Burgenland Court of Audit Director sparks deficit controversy

René Wenk, Director of the Burgenland Court of Audit, has sparked a political controversy after publishing details regarding the state's precarious financial situation on LinkedIn. Wenk reported a projected total loss of nearly one billion euros between 2020 and 2026, noting that over 500 million euros of this loss is planned for 2025 and 2026 alone. He also highlighted a 50 million euro short-term loan required for liquidity and stated that ÖBFA debts had increased by more than 158 percent to 610 million euros between 2020 and 2025.

The disclosures drew sharp criticism from the SPÖ. Club Chairman Roland Fürst accused Wenk of behaving like a political actor rather than a neutral auditor, stating, "Instead of examining soberly, he comments, evaluates and polemicizes. In doing so, he damages the authority of the institution whose independence he should embody."
