Burgenland State Court of Audit faces political dispute over fiscal reports

A political dispute has emerged in Burgenland following a report from the State Court of Audit regarding the region's finances. The audit identified cumulative losses approaching one billion euros and noted that cash reserves, which stood at 300 million euros in 2021, have been completely exhausted by the 2024/25 period.

Members of the SPÖ have criticized the Court of Audit and its director, René Wenk, accusing him of acting like an opposition politician rather than an independent auditor. In response, FPÖ spokesperson Thomas Grandits defended the institution, stating that attacks on the Court of Audit are attacks on the citizens' ability to monitor their tax money.

The SPÖ has also raised questions regarding the Court of Audit's own spending, noting a 40 percent increase in the budget for the Landtag's auxiliary organ compared to 2022. Critics point out that Burgenland's per capita expenditure for the Court of Audit is among the highest in Austria.
