Burgenland truck toll plans face industry criticism

Transport industry groups and experts from the Chamber of Commerce are criticizing a planned truck toll on three state roads in Burgenland, Austria, scheduled to begin on January 1, 2027. The digital usage fee for trucks exceeding 3.5 tons would be implemented via annual vignettes costing between 650 and 1,000 euros.

Critics argue the toll disproportionately affects regional transporters rather than large international transit companies. Because 82 percent of goods transported in Austria travel short distances of no more than 80 kilometers, the levy is expected to increase costs for regional freight. Industry representatives warn that these additional expenses—which could reach 10,000 euros annually for a fleet of ten vehicles—will likely be passed down to industry, trade, and ultimately consumers.

Transport companies are already facing pressure from rising energy and personnel costs, existing toll fees, and investments required for decarbonization. Stakeholders have called on Burgenland politicians to reconsider the plan, suggesting that measures to ensure competitiveness and economic relief are needed instead of new financial burdens.
