Burgenland winemakers face early harvest amid extreme drought

The wine and gourmet days in Eisenstadt have commenced, featuring 52 stalls, regional specialties, and musical performances. A highlight of the opening was the coronation of Maria Liegenfeld from Donnerskirchen as the Austrian Wine Queen.

Simultaneously, winemakers in the Burgenland region are preparing for an exceptionally early harvest. Due to extreme heat and the driest twelve-month period in 176 years of recorded history, the 2026 vintage faces significant challenges. Rainfall in Burgenland has dropped to nearly half of its usual value.

Herbert Oschep, chairman of Wein-Burgenland, noted that while the grapes have survived the heat, the combination of high temperatures and prolonged drought is expected to reduce yields by 20 to 30 percent compared to the 2025 season. The harvest is expected to begin approximately 14 days earlier than usual.
