Burglary trends and new tactics reported in Germany

Burglary rates and methods are drawing attention in Germany. According to the 2024 Police Crime Statistics, there were 78,436 recorded cases of burglary, with total damages from stolen goods estimated at 340.6 million euros. The German Insurance Association (GDV) reported approximately 90,000 burglaries in houses and apartments, with insurance payouts reaching roughly 350 million euros and an average damage per incident of about 3,800 euros.

While cash remains a primary target for thieves once they enter a home, experts note that criminals increasingly prioritize highly liquid technology, such as smartphones, cameras, and computers.

Additionally, police are warning about a specific tactic known as the ‘cookie trick’ originating in Italy. In this method, burglars place a biscuit under a doormat to monitor occupancy. If the biscuit is crushed, it indicates someone is home; if it remains intact over time, it signals the residence is likely empty, making it a target for theft. This tactic has been observed in Germany as well.
