Burjassot eviction of researcher suspended following local protests

An eviction scheduled for Daniel González, a researcher at the University of Valencia, has been suspended for ten days following significant local protest and social pressure in Burjassot. The suspension was announced by the judicial commission as demonstrators, organized by the Sindicat d’Habitatge and other housing collectives, gathered outside the residence.

González has resided in the rental property since 2009. The legal dispute involves an investment fund that purchased the property at auction. Despite having two previous court rulings in his favor regarding the validity of his rental contract and a purchase option he was unable to execute, the eviction process proceeded. González described the judicial decision as ‘aberrant’ and ‘unjust,’ noting that he had attempted to follow all legal procedures, including a purchase option signed in 2013.

The ten-day reprieve provides a temporary window for social collectives and the researcher to seek a long-term housing solution and avoid further displacement.
