Burkina Faso and Nigeria seek to reset ties amid regional mobility discussions

Burkina Faso has formally proposed bilateral talks with Nigeria to review cooperation and reset diplomatic ties. The proposal follows a period of tension after Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger exited ECOWAS to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). While Nigeria previously imposed sanctions on these breakaway states, both nations are now exploring renewed engagement focused on security and regional stability. Current cooperation includes digital infrastructure projects, such as Nigeria exploring fiber routes through Niger and Benin to reduce internet costs in Burkina Faso.

In a separate development regarding regional integration, an international delegation visited Porto-Novo, Benin, to discuss mobility and cross-border cooperation between Benin and Nigeria. As part of the preparatory activities for the ABORNE 2026 conference, officials discussed the potential of lagoon navigation to facilitate travel and stimulate commercial exchange between the two neighboring countries.
