Burkina Faso and regional neighbors sign refugee return agreements

Togo, Burkina Faso, Benin, and Ghana have signed three tripartite agreements with the UNHCR to establish a framework for the voluntary, safe, and dignified return and reintegration of Burkinabè refugees. Signed in Lomé, these agreements aim to move beyond emergency humanitarian management toward a structured regional solution as the Sahel crisis persists.

The agreements create consultation and monitoring mechanisms between the host nations, Burkina Faso, and the UNHCR. This framework is intended to prepare for potential large-scale returns while ensuring that repatriation remains a choice made with full knowledge by the refugees.

The humanitarian pressure on host countries is significant. By mid-2026, Ghana reported approximately 13,368 Burkinabè refugees, while Benin recorded over 11,000. The influx of displaced persons continues to strain essential services, including health, education, and food security, in the host regions.
