Burkina Faso and Senegal launch major electricity access initiatives
Burkina Faso has launched the ‘Faso Wa-Fulu’ initiative, a massive 10-year investment plan exceeding 2,800 billion FCFA aimed at achieving universal electricity access. Adopted by the Council of Ministers, the plan involves two phases, with a second five-year phase focused on consolidation by 2030. The project intends to electrify 6,700 new localities by constructing nearly 59,000 kilometers of new power lines and rehabilitating 29,000 kilometers of existing ones. To support this, 44 electrification brigades will be created, requiring the recruitment of over 1,200 agents.
In Senegal, the Director General of the Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency (ASER), Pape Momar Ngom, reaffirmed the state's commitment to providing universal electricity access by 2029. A new program is being planned to electrify the remaining 6,471 villages once financing is secured. The agency is also looking to generalize the use of innovative solar ‘all-in-one’ kits to provide power to isolated rural populations.
