Burkina Faso announces Sovereignty League football initiative

The Sovereignty League, a presidential initiative aimed at revitalizing Burkinabè football, was officially presented on October 24, 2026, in Ouagadougou. Scheduled to run from January to June 2027, the competition is exclusively reserved for Burkinabè citizens.

The project focuses on grassroots development by detecting local talent across various regions to identify potential candidates for national team selections. Beyond sports, the initiative seeks to professionalize the sector; participants will receive salaries and be registered with the National Social Security Fund (CNSS) to ensure social protection and economic empowerment.

Additionally, the league aims to utilize the expertise of former regional footballers for coaching and training. The competition is also designed to promote social cohesion and highlight local cultural identities by uniting different regions through sport.
