Burkina Faso commemorates 39th anniversary of Thomas Sankara's assassination
Burkina Faso marked the 39th anniversary of the assassination of Captain Thomas Sankara and twelve of his companions on October 15, 2026. Official commemorations were held at the Thomas Sankara Memorial in Ouagadougou, featuring military honors and wreath-laying ceremonies presided over by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo on behalf of President Ibrahim Traoré.
During the ceremonies, President Traoré called for national unity and vigilance, warning that internal divisions pose a significant threat to the nation’s progress. He urged citizens to remain faithful to Sankara’s revolutionary ideals, including economic sovereignty and self-sufficiency, while praising the security forces for their sacrifices in the fight against insecurity.
The legacy of Sankara, who led the country from 1983 until his death in 1987, continues to resonate across Africa. In Chad, the Réveil panafricain pour le changement (RPC) organized a commemorative panel in N’Djaména to discuss his impact on African sovereignty and debt restructuring. Sankara remains a symbol of anti-imperialism and social reform, known for his efforts in literacy, vaccination, and women's rights.
