Burkina Faso commissions 26.4 MW Bobo II thermal power plant

Burkina Faso inaugurated the Bobo II thermal power plant in Bobo‑Dioulasso on 7 August 2026. The facility, financed entirely by the national electricity company SONABEL at a cost of more than 33 billion CFA francs, comprises three 8.8 MW generator sets for a total capacity of 26.4 MW. Minister of Energy, Mines and Carrières Yacouda Zabré Gouba presided over the ceremony, highlighting the project as a step toward the country’s energy sovereignty.

The plant includes fuel‑storage tanks, three 12 MVA transformers and auxiliary systems for cooling, fuel and oil treatment, and water purification. Built by PPI Burkina in 15 months, the new capacity raises the installed power at the Bobo‑Dioulasso site from 60 MW to 86.4 MW and is expected to feed the national inter‑connected grid, improving electricity reliability across Burkina Faso.
