Burkina Faso denounces expulsion of citizens from Guinea

Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, has expressed grave concern following the forced departure of thousands of Burkinabè citizens from Guinea. The exodus follows a decision by Guinean authorities to ban artisanal and illegal gold mining in the Siguiri region to combat environmental degradation, including the pollution of the Niger and Tinkisso rivers.

Minister Sana stated that neither the Burkinabè nor the Malian authorities were informed of the operation in advance. He reported that some Burkinabè nationals sustained injuries, including gunshot wounds, during the process, which he characterized as potentially involving cruel and inhumane treatment.

In response, the Burkinabè government has mobilized approximately 100 buses to facilitate the dignified repatriation of its citizens. Many of the displaced miners are currently seeking refuge in Mali, where Malian youth have mobilized to provide humanitarian assistance.

Guinean Foreign Minister Morissanda Kouyaté met with accredited diplomats to defend the state’s sovereignty and environmental mandate, asserting that the crackdown is necessary to protect natural resources and that the nation remains committed to Pan-African values despite its firm stance on illegal mining.
