Burkina Faso deploys Chinese Sky Dragon air defence system

Burkina Faso has introduced a new Sky Dragon air defence system into service, manufactured by the Chinese company China North Industries Corporation (Norinco). On 1 September, the Burkinabe Presidency released footage showing the system in operation, including a missile launch and a mobile air surveillance radar.

Analysis by Janes Information Services suggests the equipment is the Sky Dragon 30. This mobile system is designed to protect troops and key locations from aerial threats such as aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. The Sky Dragon 30 reportedly features a maximum range of 30 kilometers and can reach altitudes of up to 18 kilometers. It is capable of engaging up to 12 targets simultaneously using an infrared seeker.

The deployment of this hardware is part of an increasing trend of Burkina Faso acquiring military equipment from China. Recent acquisitions have included Norinco armored vehicles, artillery systems, and multiple rocket launchers. The announcement coincided with video presentations marking the fourth anniversary of military leader Ibrahim Traoré in power.
