Burkina Faso engineers warn of infrastructure risks due to illegal practice

The Ordre des ingénieurs en génie civil du Burkina Faso (OIGC-BF) has raised alarms regarding the declining quality of national infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and buildings. During a press conference in Ouagadougou, Ousmane Honoré Ouédraogo, president of the OIGC-BF, identified the illegal practice of civil engineering as a primary cause of structural failures and rapid road degradation.

Ouédraogo highlighted that the involvement of unqualified actors and a lack of rigorous oversight pose significant threats to public safety and national sovereignty. He noted that poorly designed or controlled structures, such as schools and hospitals, can endanger thousands of lives. To combat these issues, the Order is advocating for stricter enforcement of Law No. 020-2012/AN, which regulates the profession, as well as the implementation of standardized pricing for engineering services and increased combat against unlicensed practitioners.
