Burkina Faso establishes SOVIB to launch domestic wine industry
The government of Burkina Faso has approved a decree to create the Société viticole du Burkina Faso (SOVIB), a mixed-economy company dedicated to grape cultivation and wine production. The company will be headquartered in Bobo-Dioulasso with an initial capital of 1 billion FCFA. Ownership is split between the state (45%), domestic private investors (45%), and the Société nouvelle Brasserie du Faso (10%).
The project includes the construction of an industrial unit in Bobo-Dioulasso at an estimated cost of 9.8 billion FCFA (approximately $16.75 million). The initiative aims to reduce the country's heavy reliance on wine imports, which averaged 13,780 tons annually between 2021 and 2025.
While the project is expected to create hundreds of jobs, the long-term viability of the industry depends on the expansion of local grape cultivation. Currently, grape farming in the region remains experimental, and specific details regarding the plant's processing capacity and exact commissioning schedule have not yet been disclosed.
