Burkina Faso helmet usage rises to 80% in Manga

The mandatory helmet law for two-wheeled vehicle users in Burkina Faso is seeing significant adoption. In the city of Manga, the rate of helmet use has risen to over 80%, a substantial increase from just 16% recorded in June.

Saïdou Ouoba, the interim regional director of the National Police for Nazinon, reported that police have been conducting roadside checks and awareness campaigns to enforce the regulation. While the increase is notable, officials emphasized that users must wear helmets correctly and securely to ensure maximum protection.

The initiative follows a rise in road accidents; the region has recorded more than 200 accidents resulting in over 30 deaths. While the measure aims to reduce serious injuries and fatalities, challenges remain regarding the accessibility and affordability of helmets for low-income populations.
