Burkina Faso holds military tribute to Thomas Sankara
Burkina Faso held its 11th monthly military tribute to former President Thomas Sankara and his companions at the Thomas Sankara Memorial on September 3, 2026. The ceremony was led by the Minister of War and Patriotic Defense, Major General Célestin Simporé.
During the event, General Simporé announced that his ministry would contribute 5 million FCFA toward the construction project of the Thomas Sankara Memorial. He described the monthly tribute as more than a duty of memory, calling it a renewal of the nation's commitment to dignity, sovereignty, and social justice.
Simporé characterized Sankara as a symbol of collective emancipation and urged the youth to participate in nation-building. He emphasized that Sankara's ideals—including human rights, women's empowerment, education, and the fight against corruption—should continue to guide public action and the country's efforts to face current challenges.
