Burkina Faso honors female scientific talents at Hakili Mousso 2026

Burkina Faso held the first edition of the Hakili Mousso national competition in Ouagadougou on September 19, 2026, to promote and recognize female scientific talent. The ceremony was presided over by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, representing President Ibrahim Traoré.

Part of the Presidential Initiative for Quality Education for All (IPEQ), the competition targeted young women who earned scientific baccalaureates in 2026. Following regional selections, 84 finalists participated in a final phase involving mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The finalists underwent a week of preparatory immersion at the National Scientific High School of Ouagadougou.

Winners received various prizes, including cash awards ranging from 500,000 to 2 million FCFA, motorcycles, computers, scholarships, and fuel vouchers. Beyond immediate prizes, the initiative provides long-term support for finalists, such as national study scholarships, assistance with university placement, housing, dining, and health insurance. The program aims to bridge the gender gap in scientific disciplines and dismantle prejudices preventing girls from pursuing technical and scientific higher education.
