Burkina Faso introduces new integrated solid waste management strategy

Burkina Faso is developing a new national strategy for integrated solid waste management to address environmental and sanitary challenges in urban centers. The framework, presented during a workshop in Ouagadougou on October 14, 2026, aims to reorganize the waste management system through collaboration between the state and local municipalities.

The country produces approximately 4 million tonnes of waste annually, leading to issues such as illegal dumping and plastic pollution. The proposed strategy, which covers a multi-year period (noted as 2026-2028 in one report and 2027-2029 in another), is aligned with the nation's agropastoral and hydraulic offensive.

Key objectives include eradicating poor waste management practices and improving sanitation. Proposed actions include the deployment of waste containers in major cities and promoting source sorting to create a more efficient management dynamic across the country's communes.
