Burkina Faso Justice Minister addresses judicial infrastructure and excellence
Burkina Faso’s Minister of Justice, Edasso Rodrigue Bayala, has addressed concerns regarding judicial infrastructure and prison conditions. During recent exchanges, the Minister acknowledged challenges stemming from aging court buildings and an increasing volume of legal cases. To address these issues, the government is continuing the rehabilitation of existing jurisdictions and considering the construction of new facilities, including the potential relocation of the Ouagadougou detention center.
In the penal system, the Ministry is focusing on inmate training and production. Between 2020 and 2024, inmate participation in cereal production exceeded 600 tonnes, with approximately 350 tonnes projected for 2025. The government also aims to expand citizenship education clubs across the country to promote civic engagement.
To encourage professional standards, the Ministry held the inaugural ‘La Balance d’or’ judicial excellence awards in Ouagadougou. The initiative rewards performance, ethics, and innovation, with evaluations based on case processing speed, decision quality, and the use of information technology. Notable recipients included the Koudougou High Court, named the best court, and the Fada N’Gourma Court of Appeal, recognized as the best appellate court.
