Burkina Faso launches 5 billion FCFA poultry production initiative

Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Animal and Fisheries (MAERAH) has launched the ‘Zero poultry coop empty’ operation, a 5 billion FCFA initiative designed to boost national poultry production. Part of the 2026-2028 agro-pastoral, hydraulic, and fisheries offensive, the program aims to enhance food sovereignty and meet rising consumer demand by supporting 500 farmers who already possess suitable infrastructure.

The initiative provides two types of support kits. Modern poultry kits, valued at 2,140,000 FCFA, include 1,000 improved breed chicks, 3,350 kg of feed, veterinary products, and health monitoring services. Traditional poultry kits, valued at 1,335,000 FCFA, consist of 100 adult birds (10 roosters and 90 hens) and 2,000 kg of feed for six months.

Emilien Ulrich Emmanuel Yisso Bakoné, Director General of Animal Productions, stated that the goal is to ensure modern poultry is ready for consumption by the end of the year, while traditional poultry cycles are expected to be ready by early 2027. Interested producers can register via the ministry’s official platform starting August 24, 2026.
