Burkina Faso launches BRICIR to combat road law violations

Burkina Faso has officially launched the Brigade de recherche et d’intervention contre l’incivisme routier (BRICIR), a new motorized police unit dedicated to combating road law violations in Ouagadougou.

Security Minister Mahamadou Sana announced that the unit will act as a complement to the existing video-verbalization system. A primary mission of BRICIR is to track down offenders who have failed to pay fines recorded through electronic e-verbalization. The brigade will also target hit-and-run drivers, those involved in traffic accidents, speeding, dangerous stunts, and illegal parking.

National Police Director General Thierry Dofizouho Tuina stated that the unit is not merely another control group but a specific response to widespread road indiscipline. Members have undergone training in police ethics, deontology, and specialized intervention techniques. Minister Sana emphasized a shift from awareness campaigns to active repression, warning that violators can be intercepted even months after an infraction occurs.
