Burkina Faso promotes digital services and local production amid security concerns
During the National Days of Patriotic Engagement and Citizen Participation (JEPPC) in Burkina Faso, the transitional government of the Revolutionary Progressive People (RPP) regime has showcased various digital services. These include e-criminal records, e-nationality certificates, and the digitalization of Universal Health Insurance (AMU).
Critics argue that this technological push creates a social divide, as internet penetration remains below 20% and 4G coverage is largely limited to urban centers. For instance, online registration for the AMU currently reaches only about 1.3% of the population. Observers suggest that national priorities should focus more on security and education, noting that digital services are difficult to implement in a territory fragmented by insecurity and displacement.
In a separate aspect of the JEPPC, President Ibrahim Traoré has called for increased economic sovereignty through the ‘Made in Burkina’ initiative. The campaign encourages citizens to produce, transform, and consume local products to reduce dependence on imports. Additionally, a sub-regional caravan (CSREP) has been announced to promote social cohesion and patriotic values across Ghana, Togo, and Benin.
